The OHSAA Tennis State Championship showcases the best players from the state. Drew Evans and Tucker Berry represent St. Xavier. They recently beat Beavercreek. Their match at Friday's state championship will be their first. The event will be held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Kings Island.

Ben Pomeranets wins the state championship in boys tennis

Ben Pomeranets won the boys tennis state title in Mason, Ohio on Sunday. Andrew Zimcosky (defending state champion), is a senior from Chagrin Falls. Three times, Pomeranets defeated Zimcosky at sectional and regional tournaments before progressing to the state finals. Pomeranets defeated Legacy Christian’s Tucker Culpepper during the semifinals. Pomeranets won both the second and third sets after they lost the first.

Senior West Virginia recruit scored 28 point, grabbed nine rebounds, and had three assists during overtime in the state final. In the semifinal win against Anthony Wayne, he scored 20 points. He was a West Virginia recruit who went 33-4 for the season.

The OHSAA in Ohio is a nonprofit, unincorporated organization that governs high schools athletic programs. The OHSAA organizes state championship competitions for most sports. The Ohio High School Athletic Association, (OHSSAA), has sanctioned tennis since it was first established. OHSAA also recognizes individual champions.


Every year, the Div. IV State Championships. The state championships will be held Saturday, June 4th at 7pm in Strongsville. Regional tournaments are held in many places throughout the state.

OHSAA Tennis tournaments are organized in bracket format. Each semifinal winner from each bracket plays the other semifinalist. The losers in each semifinal will then compete for third place. Tiebreakers determine which players will win. The finals of the state tournament will be decided by tiebreakers.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association sponsors several regional tennis events in addition the state tournament. These tournaments offer players the chance to demonstrate their talents and be recruited by universities and colleges. The Ohio High School Athletic Association's Tennis Program is comprised of college, junior high, and high school coaches.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association will vote on 14 proposed amendments for its constitution and bylaws. The board of director has already approved three issues. One issue is still under discussion. These changes will take effect in May 16th and be effective for the 2022-23 school years.

The changes would allow high school athletes to commercially capitalize on their name, image and likeness. This would allow high-school athletes to sign endorsement agreements while still keeping their amateur status. The OHSAA quickly pointed out that these proposed changes would not have any impact on athletes' eligibility for athletic competition.
